Lewiston went up fast in the second half of the nineteenth century, and roughly a quarter of what comes to market predates 1900. The stock ranges widely: brick and clapboard rowhousing near the canals, larger Italianate and Queen Anne houses on the streets above the city where the mill agents and merchants built, and plain workers housing in between. Systems in houses this age have usually been replaced more than once, so their condition varies considerably from one address to the next.
