Thanksgiving Decor Ideas for Indoors & Outdoors

Thanksgiving DecorDecorating your home to celebrate the seasons and holidays is important. It provides a sense of place and time to you and your guests. Thanksgiving décor reminds family members of the holiday parties of years past as they look forward to the upcoming celebration and approaching feast. Here are some Thanksgiving décor ideas for indoors & outdoors to inspire warmth, comfort, and love in your New England home this holiday season. You will be orchestrating an inviting holiday space for friends and family to gather in your new Central Maine home this year and for many years to come. Have a happy Thanksgiving!

Indoors

Table Runner: A carefully selected table runner might just be the perfect focal point for your holiday decorating regime. The table runner should complement your overall decorating color scheme for the holiday. You will create a sense of comfort for your guests when they return year after year and see their old friends and new friends sitting together at the table with something familiar and unique to the season. Just remember to mix things up each year with additional décor. A new centerpiece arrangement every year will keep things interesting for you and your guests

Color Scheme: Your Thanksgiving color scheme could be traditional (red, yellow, orange, brown) but it isn’t imperative. Choose your color scheme wisely and maintain it for upcoming years. You will be creating a sense of place and time when you use the same color scheme for the Thanksgiving holiday each year. Elle Décor posted an inspiring Thanksgiving color scheme article in 2020 highlighting 12 color schemes ranging from traditional to white and terra-cotta. It isn’t important to copy any one scheme. Simply look for inspiration and create a color scheme to celebrate the holiday particular to your tradition.

Artisan Shaped Candles & Pillars: Scented candles come in a variety of holiday shapes, from turkeys and pinecones to pumpkins. Consider incorporating several shaped scented candles with one or two large white unscented pillar candles on a wooden or silver tray to create an understated centerpiece for your dining table.

Centerpiece: You will definitely want to create a beautiful centerpiece for your dining room table. Elements can include candles, foliage, branches, squash, and rustic elements. Take inspiration from decorating magazines and create something truly unique. Employ help from the more creative members of your family if your inspiration is temporarily eclipsed by other holiday matters (and don’t forget to give them a proper centerpiece budget).

Outdoors

Door Wreath: A door wreath is a simple and tasteful outdoor Thanksgiving decorating solution. A dried foliage wreath, apple & grapevine wreath, or corn husk wreath all make for understated and beautiful adornment to greet your guests when they first arrive. Retailers such as William Sonoma and Pottery Barn have hundreds of different wreaths to choose from online. If you prefer to make things yourself, you can take inspiration by perusing their offerings and creating your very own wreath of distinction.

Porch Display: You don’t need to overwhelm your guests with an elaborate porch display. A handful of pumpkins and gourds of different sizes will nicely complement the fall porch plants you select for your home. Traditional New England fall porch plants include mums, marigolds, ornamental kale, and ornamental grasses. Consider using galvanized buckets or decorative ribbons on terra-cotta pots. Select ribbon colors within your chosen indoor color scheme. This will tie everything together (indoor and outdoor) in one effective step.
